Services
Three Products, Three Jobs
Most landscape work calls for one of three things: something to grow in, something to improve the ground you already have, or something to cover and protect it. We carry a product for each.
Screened Topsoil
Topsoil is the upper 2 to 8 inches of ground. It holds the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms, and it is where plants put their roots and draw their nutrients. Our screened topsoil has been sifted to remove clumps, rocks, roots, sticks, and other debris. What remains is loose and easy to spread. It mixes well with compost, potting soil, and fertilizer, and it takes amendments for drainage without a fight. Homeowners use it to build new garden beds, repair lawns, and grade the ground around a house.
Mushroom Soil
After a mushroom crop is harvested, the bedding it grew in, mostly straw and manure, is processed into an organic amendment. That material goes by several names: mushroom compost, spent mushroom substrate, or simply mushroom soil. Worked into poor or marginal ground, mushroom soil does a lot:
- Loosens heavy clay
- Reduces surface crusting and compaction
- Improves drainage and feeds beneficial soil microbes
- Supplies nutrients, so plants need less fertilizer
It is rich in soluble salts, which can harm seedlings and salt-sensitive plants. For that reason it is usually blended into garden soil rather than used on its own. Fall is a good time to add it, because it has the winter to mellow before spring planting.
Mulch
We carry root and bark mulch, plus black and brown mulch. A layer over your beds holds moisture in the ground, cuts down on weeds, and slows erosion. Around trees, it also puts a buffer between the trunk and the string trimmer. Late spring, once the soil has warmed, is the usual time to put it down.
Three Products, Three Jobs
There are two ways to get your material home.
**Delivery.**
For a larger amount, we bring the soil right to your property. That spares you the shoveling, the hauling, and the cleanup in the back of your vehicle.
**Yard pickup.**
If you would rather load it yourself, you can come to the yard at the rear of 2635 West Chester Pike. The yard runs by appointment between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, so call ahead and we will set a time that works.
Either option starts with a phone call. Tell us what you are working on, and we will talk through which product fits.
Matching the Material to the Project
Picking the wrong product costs money and a growing season. Here is the short version of what we tell customers:
**Starting a bed from scratch or filling low spots:** begin with screened topsoil, which gives roots a clean base.
**Ground that is hard, clumpy, or slow to drain:** mushroom soil worked into the existing dirt will open it up.
**A bed that is already planted:** a mulch layer on top keeps it moist and weeded.
Many projects use all three in sequence. Topsoil goes down first, mushroom soil gets mixed in, and mulch finishes the surface. Getting each layer right matters, because mulch laid over poor soil will not deliver what you are paying for.
